RESEARCH ETHICS COMMITTEE

THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

Research Ethics Committee Purposes

The Research Ethics Committee exist to:
  • Promote and maintain the highest of ethical standards regarding the use of human subjects in research conducted by students, faculty and staff of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

  • Identify and minimize research risks that may place research subjects, the researcher or the Seminary and its employees in undue or unnecessary jeopardy.

  • Encourage, support, serve and expedite the research goals and efforts of the Seminary community.

Research Ethics Committee Policies

The Research Ethics Committee must approve any and all non-exempt research involving human subjects before such research can be conducted.

Some research may qualify as "exempt" research and may not need Ethics Committee approval.  Details regarding exempt research are spelled out in the document entitled Permission to Use Human Subjects in Research

Students, faculty, and/or staff conducting non-exempt research with human subjects must complete the Research Ethics Protocols and obtain approval to conduct the research from the Research Ethics Committee.  Failure to do so can result in academic dismissal (students), or appropriate disciplinary measures (faculty, staff).

Download each of the files below and complete the forms as instructed. Submit the forms to the LEAD School Office for processing.

Questions regarding Research Ethics Committee policies or protocols may be directed to Dr. Gary J. Bredfeldt (Committee Chair) at gbredfeldt@sbts.edu.
